The year seemed to kick off slow. But, when summer finally hit, it became obvious that it was actually going to be a pretty decent year. Of course, there are also 5 repeat offenders from last year's list, (as well as a solo project of one member that was last year's number one spot holder, No Go Know) who came back this year and rocked it even harder. And maybe it was the recission, but 2010 seemed to be a great year for EP releases, (check out "Recission Proof Music" for my favorite EP's at musicgeek.org) so the 1/2 spot was a pretty tough one to fill. But, in the end, out of probably 100+ candidates, here are my official Top 37 1/2 Albums of 2010.

Kickstarting Children Of Mercy!!

So the biggest news as of lately would have to be my fundraising efforts to get Children Of Mercy funded and off the planning room floor. The efforts have had a great start, but the pace needs to keep moving in order for this thing to be a success. I am calling on everyone I know to help out. There are lots of prizes to be had for donating. Basically, THIS IS THE PRE-ORDER OF THE BOOK AND THE COMPILATION ALBUM. Yes, for a 25 dollar donation, you can recieve the book and the compilation album! Add on some more change and things such as autographs and personal thank you's come along. Because of the time and effort I have been putting into the COM project, my work on the blogging circuit has been a bit minimal. Save for the next three weeks of releases, I think I have my list in order for the Top 37 1/2 Albums of 2010. I am hoping to do up a list of my favorite EP's this year, since there were so many, but not sure if that will come around. Fingers crossed I guess.

So another week has passed, and while there is always much to be thankful for, there really isn't much going on. I am still working diligently on the Children Of Mercy project. Watch for a compilation album coming very soon to support the cost of the book.

I've also managed to actually write a bit as of lately. But, just when I realize that I might have the urge to write, I find Keith Richard's autobiography staring me down in a store, and I am intrigued. But, the work shall continue, this I know.

But, the end of the year is coming soon, and I will definitely need my outlet for all the end of year lists that are involved. But, really, I don't have much to say. September's Eggs, One Basket

So September came and went. And what a month it proved to be. I don't think more things have happened to distrupt/enlighten my life than this ninth month of 2010. So many things have happened, it's almost intimidating to try and cover them all. But, I will most definitely try for you, the few good readers I might have left after a month long hiatus.

First off, I have been writing less and less for Fensepost, yet still had more posts this month than probably ever before. I guess the idea of building a solid backlog has finally paid off. But, now I must get back to work. The reason for a hiatus from The Word and Fensepost? Well, that is to come. Before I explain, let me show you what September had in store:

Finn Riggins: Live At The Empyrean

I saw Finn Riggins at The Empyrean earlier last month. I am so glad I chose to stick with these Boise natives rather than moving towards Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band. The show was absolutely fantastic. And the band were absolutely cordial and compellingly cool. I will definitely be attempting to see every show they do in Spokane. Yes, they were that great.

Next show on the list, Finn Riggin's label mate/frontman Jared Mees & The Grown Children at Baby Bar in the heart of downtown this coming Wednesday, October 6th. It is sure to be a rocking good time. I am a bit nervous though, as Jared Mees is just as compelling to me as say, Steve Eeley or Rocky Votalato. His talent exceeds the latter, and is damn near equal to the first. Their new single "Cockleburrs and Hay" might just be one of my favorite tracks of the year.

The real impacting news, is still to come. But, the news that has truly impacted my life beyond the art, is this:

I am getting fired, in a manner of speaking. The Air Force has decided that there are too many people currently doing the same job as I am, Electrical Systems Craftsman (earned the "Craftsman" part after my two week stay in Wichita Falls, Texas that was forementioned back in August), so they are requiring that I move on. What will I be doing? Well, this coming June, I will head to Biloxi, Mississippi to begin a 6 week technical school to become a Command Post Apprentice. Yes, I will be assisting an installition commander in...well, whatever the hell he wants. It really is an exciting oppurtunity to move out of my element a bit....and move out of the dirty trucks and even dirtier construction sites, and begin a career involving coffee, e-mails, and water cooler conversations. And the chances of not having to leave my favorite city of Spokane are looking pretty good, although i do not wish to get myself all worked up, and be entirely disappointed when I am shipped off the Bumfuck, North Dakota. No matter where I end up, I am pretty excited to try this job out for size.

So, what is the biggest news of all --- Ladies and Gentlemen:

CHILDREN OF MERCY: TALES AND TEACHINGS OF FROM THE WORLD OF INDEPENDENT MUSIC.
Yes, I briefly mentioned a book for charity project I was considering back in August, and now the plan is in motion. It took off like a blazing hay barrell fire. I simply put the hook out to several artists/promoters/label owners/listeners, and so many beautiful people bit on. In essence, the book is a collection of folks involved in some form with the world of independent music telling their stories and giving a bit of advice on the industry as it is today. Thus far, I have over 30 great folks actively persuing the time to give me a few good words on this subject. What I have recieved thus far has been absolutely outstanding. I have been playing a coordinator, behind the scenes sort of role in the whole project, and so many of the contributors have stepped up to take on extra roles as well. There are also going to be 3 different CD compilations coming soon in order to raise funds for the physical printing of the book. And what charity have I decided to use as a platform...as of right now, I plan to donate all proceeds to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in the U.S. and The Cystic Fibrosis Trust in the UK. Nothing new to report. Spend the weekend rearranging the basement to be a sweet man cave. Been caught googling Rush Tour posters. Discovering the beauty of 100 proof vodka and WIC approved orange juice from concentrate. Been thinking about writing. Thinking about publishing a book on music for charity. Waiting to see Finn Riggins at Empyrean this Saturday, but might ex out to see Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band on next Wednesday instead before they get super famous after touring with Portugal. The Man. Becoming addicted to free stuff on Craigslist. Wishing Glenn Beck would combust spontaneously, then I might believe in an interventionist God. Here are a few things I am excited about:

Finding it hard to do any of the real writing I would like to do. Finding it very easy to tour through the latest DVR recordings (started watching Arrested Development, I have really been missing out). So, in order to feel at least a bit productive, I'll do a few updates.

I've decided to break into the world of volunteering. I'm scheduled to to some ushering work for the Spokane Civic Theatre in their productions of The Buddy Holly Story and White Christmas. Should be a good time.

I'm also looking into finding the right oppurtunity to support KYRS - Thin Air Community Radio. I only recently discovered this community based radio station based in Spokane. Check them out, and if you find yourself with a few extra bucks, the station really needs a new tower, and has been desperately raising funds for the last year, with hopes of getting the tower up by the end of the year.

Working Man's Blues

So, I have returned to the normal life. And this has been probably the longest week in the history of weeks. But, there is much to look forward to, and so much shit happening I can't seem to sit still to do even the simplest of tasks. At least the excitement never fails to cease. Since I am basically back to the same routine, I thought I would just do a few newsbites to cover my unnecessary quota. Here we go:

Fense handed me off a 20 pound bag of CD's when I met with him at the Empire Ale House in Mount Vernon for beers and crab quesadillas. So, I have alot of great music to hear and review over the next coming months, one of which has already gone up, and is likely to be one of my favorites of 2010 - Transient Song's Cave Syndrome. I've got a few shows I will be covering in the coming weeks. Looks like three grand trips to Spokane's Empyrean Coffee House are in order. The good people at Tender Loving Empire (a premiere label in PDX) are kind enough to remember Spokane when their group's hit the streets running (our touring).

On September 4th, the Idaho based Finn Riggins will be playing their pretty little folk set.
On September 11th, the greatest one man show in Portland is making his rounds. Hello, Boy Eats Drum Machine!
On October 6th (date yet to be confirmed, but fingers crossed) Jared Mees & The Grown Children will bring their pretty little ditties to the Lilac City.

I'm hoping to make it to each of these shows. But, as you know I have a shit ton of kids and a real job that takes up alot of freaking time. So, we shall see. And remember to watch for updates here and at Fensepost.com for the absolute best live reviews.

I Am Still Stranded(ing)!

Still on vacation. Leaving Southwest Washington tomorrow for....Northwest Washington, I guess. A bit of camping, summer sun, and probably a bit of debauchary in the Kurt Cobain worshiping heartland. Then it's back to the daily grind in Spokane (I miss you my little Spoko). It's been a good time overall. Went to see The Fenbi International Superstars at The Hop & Vine in Portland, was completely blown away by their stage presence and overall energy. I also spent some good bonding time with the rest of the TART Productions staff. Also had some wonderful and tender moments with my beloved family. And saw a bath tub that was used in the mental asylum they filmed One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest at. Yes, it's been good.

Had two great posts over at Fensepost. The first is an album review for the delightful offspring of one of my favorite bands that recently parted ways (No Go Know, tear). But, this is really a great album that deserves a sense of credibility by itself. The later is a brilliant tribute band that everyone needs to know (and it features Shawn Fogel of Golden Bloom, so it's definitely a plus.

Stranded on Vacation [Newsbites]

I am sitting on the third floor balcony of my room at the Rivertide Suites in Seaside Oregon. The night air is calm, almost majestic. Internet is being politely stolen from a quaint little Mexican eatery across the street called The Stand. The children are asleep, the wife is watching Independence Day on cable. I am about a week into my vacation over on the Washington/Oregon coast. And the events just seem to keep on rushing by like the tides of the Pacific Ocean I took my daughters to romp around it earlier in the day. It has been an amazing vacation thus far to say the least.

Of course, all the excitement of relaxation and hectic visitations has led me to basically be a recluse from the writing world. It's probably a good thing I don't get paid, because I would probably find myself playing with my pecker through a pair of corduroy pants at the back of the unemployment line for the effort, or the lack thereof, that I have put into some real form of accomplishment. August is rolling around quickly, and I've fallen pretty behind on the work I had the greatest of intentions to complete for the good folks (Hi Janelle!) at Green Light Go Publicity. But, in all honesty, I have been enjoying the time with the family too much to really worry about it. I will make something happen. I'm (sort of) sure about that.

Thankfully, I was pretty prepared for the lack of ambition I would most likely have before I even left Qatar. So, I had some stuff backlogged for Fensepost. And I also attended a show in Spokane, so that has been out. So, the future may look bleak, but the present is rolling just fine. Here are the updates from the Fense:

Yen Pox Clouds All Around

I've been home about a week and a half now. And it has been fantastic. I've made a few trips to the park(s) with the kids. Ran all around the city. Did an 8K run up in the hills of Deer Park, Washington (where I also drove all around looking for landmarks from Benny & Joon, which was shot there, found nothing). Overall, just enjoying not working at all and reconnecting with the family. Had an ER visit for ear infection for one, and a double dose of the flu for the other two. Ahh, childhood sickness, it's bound to happen. As of this morning though, all seems well.

I haven't gotten around to writing too much. A video review here, and one album review there. In time, it will all come back I'm sure. Just enjoying regular life too much right now. Still tracking the blogs though, Fense has had some pretty exciting stuff lately. He's unleashed a few batches of Cover Art pieces he had yet to release, as well as a podcast filled summer time laced indie classics. I've also had a couple reviews up as well:

Very excited for the developments of this one.

I'm also ecstatic about my road trip coming this Saturday. I will be down in Cowlitz County for two weeks, with a few days in between spent down somewhere undisclosed on the Oregon Coast. Pig N Pancake and rocky beaches I come! This will be followed by a stop through Ocean City, Bellingham, and ending in a night in Seattle. Going to be great. Pretty busy time as well.

I'm still looking for a show to get to in Portland while I am stationed out of Kelso-Longview. I haven't seen/heard/researched any bands playing that I actually know in that time frame, so I am up for some new suggestions if anyone has any? Anyone?

The Land of Which I Came

I am from Cowlitz County in Washington State. For some of you, the joke might take place right away. The Kelso-Longview and surrounding areas is, by all means, quite the laughing stock of the great Northwest at times. Aside from a few honorable mentions, nothing has really came out of that town. Kelso is the smelt capital of the world and the home of Major League pitcher Jason Schmidt. Aside from that, pickings are rather slim. It's not a horrible place in general. But I can say this with all honesty - there is nothing beyond irreputable disaster that would make me want to move back to my birthplace.

And for all you right wing/conservative/blatent racist nutjobs out there - Cowlitz County offers one of the finest publications that will definitely invoke the seed of hatred upon your already black heart, The Daily News. But, there's also comedy! The Daily Police Blotter is, to say the least, a hoot! Aside from the regular drug (specifically Meth) arrest, which occur daily, there is also a plethera of silly antics that perpentuate the community pretty well. Here I have compiled a collection of my favorite inserts of the Blotter over the course of the summer thus far.

Somewhere I feel I should throw in a disclosure stating something about not wanting to offend anyone, and not wishing to stomp on the few local reader(s) I might have. But, nah. If by now you haven't learned of the hypocrasy and ridiculisness of The Daily News, or the embarassment Cowlitz County should have as the once cleverly coined, "Deep South of The North" (credit to Christopher Eaves for that one!), then you need to wake up. And besides, this is all in good fun. And honestly, I probably know all these damn people.......

Naked and sparkling
Longview police received a report that three teenage boys were running down Washington Way naked, holding sparklers, at 12:30 a.m. Monday. The boys were gone when police arrived.
Wants dope back

A man went to the Longview police station around 10:20 p.m., "highly agitated," telling dispatchers he wanted the officer who took his marijuana at Lake Sacajawea to give it back.

Meth

Longview police Saturday responded to an apartment in the 1700 block of Baltimore Street for a report of an unknown person in the bathroom and a strange bike in the kitchen. Police arrested Larry Dean Holden, 47, Longview, on suspicion of methamphetamine possession and first-degree criminal trespass. Bail: $10,000.

Attempted arson

Cowlitz County deputies on Thursday night arrested Castle Rock resident Casey Allen Foster, 39, in the 1000 block of DeWeese Loop in Castle Rock for allegedly throwing gasoline on a woman and threatening to light her on fire. Police found Foster hiding in an outbuilding on the property, which he allegedly also threatened to set on fire. Deputies arrested him on suspicion of second-degree assault, first-degree attempted arson and felony harassment. Bail: $30,000.

Stolen quarters

Cowlitz County deputies on Wednesday arrested Daniel Lee Rathbun Jr., 35, on suspicion of residential burglary, second-degree theft and second-degree driving with a suspended license. He is suspected of stealing about $2,000 in rolled quarters from a house in the 100 block of Brownlee Road, Castle Rock. Bail: $20,500.

Threatened with toy

A realistic-looking toy handgun fooled two Kelso residents, who told police they saw a man with the gun Monday at North First Avenue and Burcham Street and heard him yell at an unseen person to stay out of his yard or he would shoot. Police said Pedro Gonzales Flores, 53, Kelso, said he was joking. Police cited him with unlawful display of a weapon and booked him into jail. Bail: $500.

No pants

A woman called Longview police around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to report a man without pants riding a bicycle on the grounds of Mint Valley Elementary School. He pulled on a pair while she was talking with dispatchers, she said. Police contacted a 38-year-old man who admitted he was the one she saw wearing a purple thong. He told police he had been getting grass off his pants.

Funny money

An employee of the Kelso McDonald's on Friday gave police two bogus bills that had been caught with a counterfeit-detecting pen. A well-made counterfeit $10 had been presented Friday by a man from Turner, Ore., who claimed he got it from a convenience store. A badly made fake $20 with the back printed upside-down was collected a week earlier in an unrelated incident.

Bad sheep

Longview police rounded up five runaway sheep who broke out of a fenced back yard on 30th Avenue Saturday afternoon and trotted toward Lake Sacajawea. A witness said he saw a man wrestling with a sheep on 30th Avenue, then followed the others as he kept dispatchers updated. The Humane Society collected the flock.

Incendiary devices

Cowlitz County sheriff's deputies Thursday arrested Adam David Roy Larimore, 28, Silver Lake, after receiving a report that he threatened to use "gas bombs" to burn down a home. Deputies said Larimore filled glass bottles with gasoline and he had to be Tased before he complied with law enforcement. He was booked on suspicion of possession of incendiary devices, use of drug paraphernalia and obstructing an officer. He posted $5,000 bail.

Mail found

A man found mail lying in the back of his truck Tuesday and said he has no idea how it got there. The mail came from addresses all over Columbia Heights. Sheriff's deputies retrieved the mail.

Mail in yard

A resident in the 100 block of Westover Drive, Longview, called the Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office Monday to report finding mail in the yard belonging to residents of five addresses on View Point Drive.

Cat fight

Kelso police early Saturday morning responded to a report of a man throwing a cat at a woman and arrested a 27-yearold Kelso man in the 1000 block of Cowlitz Way on suspicion of third-degree malicious mischief. The victim said Lee told her his cat was worth $700 and she was worthless. He then allegedly ripped the side mirror of her 1993 Geo Prism, saying he would trade the mirror for the cat. He posted $500 bail.

Man in bushes

Kelso police looked for, but didn't find, a man with a soccer ball who allegedly emerged from bushes near the playground at Barnes Elementary School Tuesday afternoon and followed three middle-school-age girls down the street. A man in a nearby driveway told police he didn't see anything.

Impersonation

Kelso police Saturday arrested a 16-year-old Kelso girl on suspicion of felony criminal impersonation. Police said the girl pretended to be her sister to avoid being arrested on a warrant, not realizing her sister had a warrant, too.

More complaints

Kelso and Longview police took more complaints Thursday about overly aggressive door-to-door salespeople. One man said the salespeople charged $36 a quart for the cleaning product.

Excessive noise

Longview police asked the owner of Kesler's Restaurant to turn down the music after an officer verified a citizen's complaint that the noise was too loud at 1:30 a.m. Thursday. The caller said this is a continuing problem.

On the nod

Kelso police Monday responded to Rite Aid for a report of a man who fell out of his vehicle and lost consciousness in the parking lot 10 minutes after buying needles. Police said the vehicle contained a spoon with melted heroin, and that Thomas Chandler Miller, 20, Kelso, appeared to be incoherent and nodding off from the effects of heroin use. He was booked on suspicion of heroin possession. Bail: $30,000.

That's a slappin'

An elderly man reportedly slapped a Kelso Safeway bakery employee on the arm Thursday afternoon because the store was out of hot French bread. The employee did not wish to press charges.

Not funny

A Woodland man called 911 shortly after midnight Thursday to report someone called him from a blocked number and said there was blood all over his apartment and a body to get rid of. Verizon and AT&T traced the call to a man in Gresham, Ore., who told the dispatcher he'd made the call as a prank. He was warned not to do it again.

Late riser

A woman informed Kelso police around 11:45 a.m. Sunday that a young male dressed all in black was walking down the middle of South Fourth Avenue stopping vehicles and asking for money for aluminum foil. He told her he wanted "to do a wake and bake" (smoke pot shortly after waking), she told police. He was gone when police arrived.

Doha No Amore!

So, after two days of traveling (Qatar-Kuwait City, Kuwait-Lepzieg, Germany-Baltimore, Maryland), I am home. I'm back in the city I grew so fond of before I left, and back to the four greatest ladies alive, my family. It's been a strange reintergration, but it's probably been the best thus far. My oldest daughter Ava ran right to me and was extremely excited to see me again. Her excitement led to my middle daughter Sophia to lose some of her immediate hesitation, but after a short period, she was my little buddy once again. My youngest, Lelaina, she would stare at me with that adorable confused baby look. But, again, by the end of the day, she had warmed up as well. And well, Melissa warmed up pretty well to if you get my drift. It feels absolutely amazing to be back home. It seems as though everything happened so fast, yet it took so damn long to get back to this point. I awoke this morning, promptly at 4:30 a.m., still in a daze from jet lag and a constant time difference adjustment, with the urge to see Spokane on foot. I went for a nice run through my own piece of "urban" paradise, dodging the broken bottles along the battered sidewalks, until I eventually circled the Spokane Arena, dipped into Riverfront Park, and made my way back down Broadway to my humble aboad. Only 30 minutes, but the air was crisp and light, and I felt as though I had the entire world by it's balls once again. I have to head into work today for a little bit, but what will soon follow is sure to be the best summer I have had in a long while, fueled by a bit of camping on the Oregon Coast as well as in the Puget Sound, a bit of indie rock enjoyment, and an overall rejuvination with family and friends who have been around only in my heart for the last half of a year. I can't explain to you how happy I am to be back in where Sprout is on the TV 24/7, and the warm feeling of family is all around me.

My work at Fensepost might slow down a bit, unless I continue to have these early morning jaunts in time. But, you will still see some good stuff coming your way. I did a few pieces for some albums that aren't due for release until later this month, August, and even some into September. And as always, Fense holds down the spot with the latest and greatest independent music you could as for.

I previously mentioned an interview I did with Jenny Boyle while she was performing over there. Well, Fense worked his magic, prettied up the whole thing, and had it up and available the day after Independence Day, as a way to continue the theme. It's probably my longest (1200 words!)and most in depth piece I have written to date. But, to give overall credit, Jenny told the story, I simply intergrated it into the indie rock world. freedom rings

Qatar is slowly becoming a distant memory. I still have a few days of homelessness and wandering abouts, but the end is in sight. I am extremely excited about all the possibilities that the rest of the year holds. Being back with my family is all I really need, but I know that alot of exciting things are about to go down, especially over the next couple of months. Oh sweet July, I've been waiting for you!

Last weekend I had the oppurtunity to see Jenny Boyle perform here, 3 times actually. It was an exhilirating show. On a random whim, I decided to e-mail Jenny to ask for an interview. After a couple of days, no response. I assumed her schedule was packed, and didn't have time for anything that wasn't already scheduled. But, yesterday, as I was "squatting" in my old room here which I have dubbed, "The Wifi Hub", I got a message from Jenny letting me know that she had about an hour free and if I could meet her, she would love to do the interview. Completely unprepared, and seeming like a high school journalism student, I met up with Jenny and had a nice conversation. She was a very nice person, with some wonderful ideals and morales concerning her constant work overseas. I think it went very well. Watch for some sort of article appearing at Fensepost, ComfortComes, or somewhere in the near future.

The air has become dryer. The tension has been release a great deal. I am going home soon. And I am fucking ecstatic! Soon I will be back in the waves of the world that I could drown in if need be. But, until then, I've got a few updates:

I have been working feroucisly at getting some articles, reviews, etc. written up in preparation for what is sure to be one of the greatest vacations I have ever endured. I plan to write while I am away and reintergrated with my family. I may find a curb in downtown Seattle to scribble down a quick poem. Or a long winding tail of an unknown world as I stare out onto the sea on Nehalem Bay. Or finding a quite moment at my home in Spokane. So, don't be afraid to check in here every once in a while. And, of course, watch for daily updates at Fensepost.com. Even if I'm not writing it, it's damn good. Better actually. Fense is the pro and the originator, he knows shit on music I could only hope to gain half the knowledge. Through all my searching, there is no greater independent music site on the net. Fact. Spotlight On: Trances Arc

I wanted to take out some time to put turn the preverbial spotlight on a new band that has come to my attention. Trances Arc. They are another fine example of the brilliant tunes that have derived from the Atlanta and/or Athens, Georgia area.

As some of you know, I am from the Northwest. And ninety percent of the time, I am writing from a blog based in the Seattle area. When I first started this gig, I was mostly writing soley about artists from the areas from Seatown down to Portland, in what I once refered to as the "Real Pacific Northwest" (basically no further east than the 5, for those who know what the hell I am talking about). But, things have changed pretty drastically over the course of almost two years. I have a few new stomping grounds. I've had my fare share of Royal Mail delivered to me from artists in the London/Leeds/general England area. Brooklyn, New York seems to have it's notice. Several artists from the Baltimore area thanks to my connects over at The Beechfield Label. And now, with my current correspondence with the good folks at Team Clermont, I have gotten to know the Atlanta and Athens area quite well (although, I must mention, the spotlighted individuals have no association with Team Clermont, although they should!) Which brings me back to, sort of, to the band that started this whole blog in the "spotlight" that I have quite harshly ignored. My bad fellas.

My buddy with The Fenbi International Superstars (yes, they always seem to make their way back to The Word) who goes by the name of Michael Phillips, sent me an e-mail with high regards for this band he once played with at a show in Georgia when he was traveling the country with his former group, who I once adored, The Young Immortals. The connects were made, and I was introduced to the lovely world of Trances Arc.

Trances Arc blends pop punk with a sort of surreal old school rock and roll feel that any one can enjoy. Their style and grace is phenomenal, their 90's alternative influence is......

on second thought, just head over to Fensepost for my official word. I just wanted to make this specific announcement on how much I enjoyed hearing these guys, and how honored I am to have had them recommended by such a talent as Michael Phillips himself. Thanks Mike. Transitional Bliss/Misery

Well, time is rapidly dissolving into the abyss before our very eyes (a.k.a. it's about tme to go mafuckin' home!) The excitement is building. I am extremely excited to return to the world I know and love. But, that's not to say that leaving here doesn't have its negative side. Part of being in the military (my bill paying job, for those who don't know) is meeting people living all over the globe, joining forces with them for a short time, building a friendship, and then leaving them without ever knowing if you will ever see them ever again. It sucks worse than Parkisans sometimes, but in the end you simply have to look at in a positive light - you could have never known them at all. And that would be outright awful to think about. So instead of becoming upet, it's best to continue to feel fortunate to have ever known these people at all. Therefore, I would like to give the preverbial shout out to Steven Larid (center of photo) and Curtis Sutton (the one who looks poorly cropped into the photo for some reason). Two of the most genuinely unique folks I have ever had the pleasure of working/playing/drinking/sharing with ever. They are headed back to Italy (their home station) soon, and the remainder of my time here will not be the same. So, to you I say - "Viaggi sicuri a voi, e mantenere l'unità su di voi". Because a John Hughes reference always works wonders in touching moments right?

Newsbites and Sword Swinging Porn Stars

There are alot of things I should be doing right now. I have a plethera of albums courtesy of Team Clermont and their graciousness in allowing me to access their DPK's and throw my indie rock loving hard dick around like a foam finger at a hockey game. But, I can't seem to make it there. I have a beautiful new expiremental album from Thom Carter at Verlaine Records that needs a spot over at Comfort Comes. But, I can't seem to do that either. I could work on my troop's EPR a bit, but that can wait. I am trying to reach my wife on Skype, but she's not answering. So, instead, I will continue to listen to The Avett Brothers and write this hear blog. I guess I have some stuff to tell you. I've been working dilligently on the editing of an interview with one of my favorite bands, Westfold that I am hoping to have go live at Crappy Indie Music The Blog and Comfort Comes at the same time. If this happens, I will be sure to pass it around harder and faster than Courtney Love. Green Light, No Go, Red Crown.

So, the only real big news I have picked up since yesterdays post, is actually pretty exciting. Fense, editor/founder of Fensepost (my regular music writing contribution site) was interviewed by Shannon, staff member and blogger for Green Light Go Music Publicity's Blog. They have created a weekly series they have entitled "Music Monday". And I'm sure Fense would say, just as I would, that it is quite the honor that they have chosen Fensepost as their first feature. Fense talks with GLGO about what exactly Fensepost is about, and why it is rapidly becoming a cult favorite in the world of indie music blogs. He's even nice enough to through my name around a little bit (tooting thy own horn: "Ron, who is my most consistent contributor....." - hell yeah!). So check it out HERE.

As a side note, Green Light Go has an amazing roster. Over the last two years, I have covered many of their artists for Fensepost. Allen Cohen Experience (creator of "The Obama Groove" as seen on CNN) would be a highlight. Other acts would include: Static Of The Gods, Dylan Mageriek (a.k.a. Misc.), and Golden Bloom. I am certain there are even more, but I can't seem to recall them at this moment. Either way, check out their site for more information. Especially if you are an artist looking for some good people to show your work around.

I have also realized that I have been out of the loop on the status of what was, fuck it they still are, my favorite band. Folks, the boys at No Go Know have decided to call it quits (details HERE). It seems as though creative differences have arrived. There doesn't seem to be any sort of hostility. Hell, friends close to them seem to think it is just a phase. But for now, Sam Smith has continued work on his solo effort, SSS (release out soon, which will very likely make the top of my best of '10 list), and Mark has moved onto working with the wonderfully original folk group Gratitillium. This is now a band I like to refer to as a Portland indie rock supergroup. It is fronted by none other than Nick Caceres, who if you haven't heard, fucking rocks to holy hell. His solo EP from a few years back, Hours of Life, is still very important to me in so many ways. The group also features ambient mastermind Simon Hannes of Archipelago, and local hype garnisher Paul Ahrens. I wish the best of luck to Scott, Mark, and the rest of the group formerly know as No Go Know. You will always hold a special place in my heart.

And before I take my journey into dreamland, I want to throw out a mention to my good friend Freddy Ruiz! Freddy created Red Crown Review several years ago, and have me my first shot at music bloghood. Oddly enough, No Go Know would be my first subject. Though the material I developed for Freddy was far from superior, he always treated me with a kindness I could never repay as he unknowingly guided me into the rays of a brand new beautiful sun drenched hobby. I am also pleased to say that, after several re-transformations, Red Crown Review seems to be back up and running. Thogh the site, and now corresponding online magazine Vaz!ne, is very much oriented toward the happenings of Salem, Oregon, it still proves for an excellent read. The month of May will be closing it's doors rather soon. This means that June, and the subseqential beginning of summer, will be upon us. This means that Doha will soon be another distant memory of a time I was shared with some great folks, all the while holding back moments of rage, sadness, and disorientation knowing that my family is living on without me. Yes, soon enough, Spokane will be right back under my feet where it belongs. Soon I will be lounging on the beaches of Lake Coure d'Alene with three beautiful girls playing in the sand at my feet, and a beautiful wife on my arm.

But for now, I am still on this shitty mattress on an unreliable bunk bed praying that the wifi holds up long enough for me to finish these words of hope and misery. I'm fresh off what might very well be my last trip into the estranged city of Doha, Qatar. It was a great way to go out if it will truly be the last. I toured through the burning streets of the beautifully manufactured Souq's Warf, haggling over the prices of fine leather and marble products. Drank the finest cup of Guava juice from the Pride of Canada (no clue why it is called this) shop, and felt at home in the area for some strange reason. I then wandered the City Center Mall with my adopted son Nick Haughn who had the same sort of excitement over bailing on watching Prince Of Persia with the rest of our group, and choosing instead to chain smoke with some Indonesian oil workers, ride a flight simulator, and basically people watch as people from so many different origins all check their e-mail on their blackberries and purchase over priced clothing and various accessories. Followed by one more trip into what I commonly refered to as "The West Central Spokane of Doha", the Gold Souq's, where for just a few Riyals, you can pick up a Louis Vitton wallet at about a 99 percent discount. If you don't care for specifics and ask as little questions as possible, you can make a great score. Overall, a wonderful time.

And so, here I am now. Silently typing away as a sweet Ziggy Marley song pours through my Notebook speakers, trying to work up the idea of writing a few more album reviews before settling down to a Brazilian indie film. Yes, this war shit is intense at times.

So, Fensepost has been running a bit slow as of lately. Fense is probably elbow deep in his dreaded "real job" just as I have been. Just returned from a nice comedy show "for the troops" featuring John Mulrooney, Richie Minervini, & Vinnie Mark. They were all decent. John Mulrooney was probably the highlight of the evening. Richie and Vinnie proved to be a bit too seasoned for a young crowd, but still entertaining and enjoyable nonetheless. They really had nothing on the last show to come through here, Matt Baetz was just too damn hilarious, and Lauren Ashley Bishop stole the show with her low self esteem and hillbilly daddy issues. But, again, very entertaining.

Time has run a bit stagnant. So the week started on an unexplainable somber note. And by the end of the week, I have worked and sweated more than I have in years. Yet somehow, I am calm once again. Humanities Pale & Disturbing Light

I've been feeling a bit off lately. Like something is missing. Of course, for the last 4 months and some change I have been missing pretty much everything. But, now something else has taken flight from the bit of normalcy I was trying to hold onto tighter than a mother holds a child in an earthquake. The birds don't sound the same. The lifelessness inside of me is beginning to appear. I'm not sure what the hell I am talking about.

I didn't eat for two days. What's even more odd is that I didn't even notice. I no longer care. What are all these damn vitamins the television says I should eat? Is it all necessary. I have many addictions, I've lost many as well, but I've never cared about my own nourishement. People have been starving since the beginning of time. Why doesn't everyone here feel at least a slight bit of guilt for our ability to over indulge on anything we want. Especially when we have people spooning out portions of food to one person, that might feed their entire family in another place. But, it's not always helpful to lecture. I have been in digital shouting matches from an old high school acquiantance over her use of racial slurs, and her irrevocable acceptance of such. I argue less and less as I grow older. And when I do, it always seems to be with the ignorant and the self indulgent. The one's who don't want to hear it anyway. Who the hell am I to think I can just induce change in a person's mind. Who the fuck am I? An ex-junkie turned husband and father with a blogging hobby? I'm no revolutionary. I am a coward if anything at all.

But, you know who is a revolutionary....Bill Carter. And his novel Fools Rush In, is a spectacular display of courage and acts of selflessness through realism. My wonderful friend Michael Phillips, of the Fenbi International Superstars, sent me a review copy of the new edition of this book. For what? I have no idea. I think he had it in his head that I might be able to help with publicity. But, what the hell do I know about books? I read them. I spoute out quotes and wish I was the author. That's about as far as I go. Nonetheless, this was one of the greatest books I have ever read. I say that in complete and utter honestly. It made me feel the same as I did with my first outing with The Sun Also Rises. It is also one of the most important books I have ever read. I've had mixed emotions about U2 and Bono alike, but it did not deter me from this book. I haven't grown more fond of the band, but their role in helping Bill Carter do what he felt he needed to do deserves mad props to say the least. Maybe I can do something with this. For now, I want you go here, purchase the documentary Miss Sarajevo as well as Bill's books, and figure out what else you can do to help out somebody, somewhere. Don't be a fucktard, if you're not helping, you're dying.

Now, it is time to knock of this self indulgent bullshit and get to sleep. I am tired. Tired of alot of things. But, mainly just plain tired of being so damn tired. I met a lady in the smoke pit today who almost made me vomit ingested tears. She asked for a cigarette, and then complained of the taste. I told her it was French. She had alot to say. She never said thank you. Then I remembered it was Mother's Day, I felt sorry for hers. I thought of this wild eyed cunt reproducing. I wanted to vomit once again.

I had every intention of writing a poem tonight, a poem for the mothers of the world. Instead I listened to Lauryn Hill attempt the acoustic guitar, stole a plethera of R&B music from a co-worker, and called the woman I love and cherish the most. This seems to be the sort of poetry in motion I work through everyday. Tomorrow is a new day. A new day means a new light. Goodnight everyone.

It's only been a couple days since my last venture to The Word, but I think I have enough news to fill a couple paragraphs. I've officially lost 40 lbs. So, of course I am celebrating with a double Whopper and a few camels. It's the perfect way to put on a couple more pounds before you get too cocky.

I've been writing again. Not sure what exactly I'm getting at with the words that come out, but that's pretty much how A Gathering Storm developed, so we'll see what comes from this sudden burst of creative energy. April is dissolving so quick it's almost too hard to digest. Good thing though. My time here in Qatar should come to and end before I know it. It really can't come soon enough. I've meant some great indviduals of tremendous spirit and originality, but the feeling has to be mutual when we say it's time to get the hell out of here. Our souls can only handle being ripped to shreds so many times.

I had a nice week recently, I finally got around to sharing the entire contents of my first original screenplay, A Gathering Storm, via my Slow Dog Journey Blog. I had some great feedback from several different angles. Hopefully this could be a push for me to finally getting around to finishing up Drafts 3 and 4, and maybe starting some new stuff. I guess we shall see.

I am also slowly working on another Slow Dog feature. I'm planning a sort of City A Day tour blog, with influence from the best travel blog ever made, Amanda Gonser's Oppurtunity Knocks. I am planning on about 15 cities, in 21 days (a rough estimate). So far I have made it through Atlanta, a two parter. We'll see how long that takes.

Currently I just completed Day One of debuting my original screenplay, A Gathering Storm, which I wrote in the summer of 2008 in Iraq. A Fine Day For Courage

April is upon us. The end of March came quickly, but seemed to teeter totter in existense until it finally disolved. I've found myself laboring in the hot sun, growing a disgusting farmer's tan, then storming the Persian Gulf in such a shape, while sipping guava juice and redbull at a pool side bar in a five star resort loaded with millionaires and their trophy wives. And yes, I continue to work on big ass bathrooms continuously. But, that's not what The Word is for am I right? No, I have some bigger and better news for you, the loyal reader(s). First of all......

Courage: The Series has premiered. It's viewing at NorwestCon in Seattle last Friday was a big hit, with over 100 in attendance, and officially premiered, after a few minor technical difficulties, at the show's web page, bigdamncourage.com. TART Productions affiliate Justin Rister kicks some ass and waxes poetics over a grungy game of chess. Very nice. So, for all of you that have stayed in touch over the last few weeks, this is the beginning of everything I have been bugging you about. Be sure to save this site, and watch for many episodes to come. It's going to get intense.

So the days move on like the tide brushing the sand back to the rocks it was once formed to. Sentences end in prepositions, and the taurine courses through my veins faster than the weak blood I pretend to need. It's almost 2 a.m., where the hell is this God you speak so highly about? I'm willing to guess he's forgotten about this place a long long time ago. But, as my dry erase marker X's out another date, I feel a bit better each time. 81 days in the pop up books of Air Force deployment history.

Had a good ten days or so since we last met. Even more to come in the near future. My contact lists keeps on a growin'. It is St. Patrick's Day. Though I am not Irish in the very least, I love the them and their culture and branded stereotypes. Hearts of gold. Livers of whales. And the best traditional bar songs. If I were able bodied enough, I would be down in Portland at Dublin's Pub watching the Fenbi International Superstars rip and roar through their incredible and Northwest reknowned set list. But, I am a few thousand miles away. So, instead I will spend the night blogging, eating lobster and t-bones, and downing 3 cans of Guinness and fall asleep watchng Gangs of New York. It's the most I can do. Literally.

Well, another week or so down, another week lost in a time I can't understand. I'm sort of a college graduate now. That's good. Working on some reviews for my newly befriended British label Pop Noise. Some wonderful pop and punk music coming from the Queen's land. Just a few updates on what myself and the TART Productions extended family have been up to:

The countdown has begun for the premiere of homeboys Justin Rister and Christopher Eaves' Courage: The Series. The first episode is set to air at NorwesCon in Portland on April 2nd. Their panel will be from 12- 2 p.m., followed by a Q&A with the actors, directors, writers, etc. Should be a great time. For those living far beyond the reign of the city of roses, episode one will air the following monday. You will be able to view the magic yourself at their website, whch is under construction at the moment, but rest assure that it will be up and ready to go. So here I am, two months down and drained. It's officially March. I've been in moderate to little isolation for the last two months. I've lost 20 pounds, as well as a bit of my pride as I work tirelessly on bathrooms. I could never have been a plumber I guess. I know the job is important, but my self esteem would be even lower if my entire life revolved around helping people shit. Someday has to do it I guess.
I've been wandering around aimlessly while listening to Blitzen Trapper and doing my best to gaze into the future. I can't wait to be back in my own little home in the ghettos (which now sports hardwood floors and brand new TV!) of Spokane, Washington. I imagine my children rolling around the ground as I blog the early Sunday mornings away. My wife awaking from a slumber she could have held onto for three days if her pride hadn't woken her. I think about Bellingham, Portland, Longview, Seaside, Astoria, etc. All these places I want to go. I just long for these days to pass as quickly as possible.
Wiggy starts his Correctional Officers training soon. Very excited for him. His spirit is immense and stamina is incredible. I think he will do great at it.
Everyone seems to be moving forward with their lives as I sit here in a strange for of purgatory just waiting for the next day on/off work. The next trip to Doha. The next landmark, birthday, holiday, something missed. The golden sun drops sometime around 5 or 6 in th evening, and the entire sky glows orange, purple, beautiful. I mingle amonst the crooked and the scared. Thousands of wounded souls all with their own agendas. "God and Suicide" plays through my ear buds. I think about both. Can't seem to figure out which one holds the most truth. The "Black River Killer" is in Oregon, nothing makes more sense than this. My knees go weak as the the taurine leaks from my body into cracked porcelain. I don't understand much anymore. I want to write. Write, write, write, write. Write until these John Waters films make sense. I want the ants off my skin and the discarded buffalo wings. I wonder what I would do without the digital world. I might choke. Who knows. Poetry flows through the Jew's nose to the hidden lies behind the old lady's eyes. Things aren't always as calm as they seem.
I'm headed to Doha again. How many times am I going to say this. How long until the wealthiest city in the world doesn't stare down at me like my elders always have. What is it that posseses people to judge so quickly? And why the does the home of natural gas have a ghetto of folks pawning off gold and small wares. And why can't I pick up for Galousies Blondes whenever the hell I feel like it. When the gas runs out, will they still be under construction? Does the prince think it's smart to live in the city center?
Everything just seems to happen. Nothing seems to be going on. There are too many truths and not enough mocha to go around. In a world more concerned with gym, tanning, laundry; when is there time for art, love, prosperiety. We idolize the bastards, we are sure to be over ran with fools.

Hello world! Just another friendly reminder and virtualing mouthing off of the random occurances and lack of perpetual bliss invading my life and work. The megastar group Saving Abel came through my location and put on a show for us troops. Not my particular brand of rock and/or roll, but still a rowdy good time that brought a good amount of cheer to alot of people who could desperately use it.

I've also been listening to the same few tracks from Blitzen Trapper's Furr. I can't believe I missed this album last year. I loved and wrote about the great tale "Black River Killer", but I was missing alot by not giving the rest of this album a chance. "Furr" is one of the greatest songs I have ever heard. I recommend you find this album, and buy it, then inject it into your brain so you never have to hear anything else ever again.

Everyone needs a Valentine. Some people swear off the idea entirely. It's the "Hallmark Created Explotation of Capitalistic Greed", some might say. But, when you find yourself thousands of miles away from your greatest love and the one you care for most, a little capitalistic greed could be least of your worries. I have such a valentine who is probably in a deep slumber at this moment, or waking to drop your breast into the mouth of a hungry child. Everyne should be as lucky as I am, but regretfully they are not. I have a woman who follows you through everything. Through the depths of Texas and South Dakota even. Through your everlasting and ridiculous hopes of writing for a living, and your unwillingness to accept your everyday station in life and understand that this blogging crap is nothing more than a hobby, and it should be treated as such. She would never tell you this, for she loves you beyond a reasonable doubt. She follows you through your nights of chasing down a dream stuck at the bottom of a whiskey bottle. The endless phone calls friends who represent everything that used to be. She's also bore you three children who are the spitting and shitting image of their mother. Three tiny and joy infested gifts from the depths of her soul, brought to you to care and pamper. A woman with too many tremendous qualities to really name all in one setting. This is the woman I would hope the entire population of this sometimes dispicable world could have. If we all did, the world would be a much calmer place to live, laugh, enjoy. I want the world to be loved, but unfortunately, no one can be loved like I am. Selfishly though, I am very proud that this woman loves me more than any other. The woman who cries herself to sleep the night before you vanish into thin air to go particiape in one of the best disasters in American history. I know she will be there waiting when I get back. I know her love for me will still be there as well. And with our seeds in tow, I will hold her once again. Happy Valentines Day my love!

I am now officially 1/6th done with my deployment. Whoa! At times it has been quick, others it drags as slow as a packed Pall Mall. I find ways to occupy the brain. Find things to look forward to. Just found this cool bit of news. A fellow Kelso '03 alumni, Megan Armand, has recently released a dance themed work out video called Dance Off The Inches: Cardio Striptease. I haven't gotten to check it out, I would imagine it is female oriented so I probably won't, but good on a classmate for such an accomplishment. I last heard Megan was acting as a cheerleader for the Chicago Storm, and I guess this is where she is at now. Congratulations on all her success! You can purchase the DVD now at Amazon.

And I'm already making plans for the summer to attend a few live shows throughout the northwest. As well as a few ComicCon appearances. But my greatest excitement is for the performance I am hoping to have in my home (yes, I mean the bedroom as well). I miss my munchkins, lazy Sunday mornings, and late nights with a sleeping child in my arms, and movie on the tube. That's where I belong. That is where I am happy. But, I'm here now. Nothing I can do about that.

One month down in this bitter land known as Qatar. Been going well. Still working on big ass bathrooms during the day and writing, running, math during the night. Sleep has merely been an option I regularly refuse. The Washington Redskins cheerleaders came last night to do a "(peep) show for the troops". It was interesting to watch 2,000 idiots go nuts over girls dancing in skimpy outfits. I can reason for the Army guys who have not seen live cleavage in months, but my fellow Airman where going a bit more crazy than necessary. All in all it was a good time. The meet and greet was fun. Something about cheerleaders with P.h.d.'s and full time jobs gives makes me laugh in a probably male schovanistic kid of way. Whatever. (Some) Women are things

The buzz is really building up for Courage: The Series (check out this write up in The Portland Mercury Blogtown). The Firefly fans are flocking back. I feel out of the loop by the fact that I vaguely remember there being a show entitled Firefly at one point. But, if you google the show, you will find a strange cult following for a show that was cancelled 7 years ago. There are alot of updates and new photos over at their Facebook page.
I had a good IM session with writer and actor Justin Rister the other night explaining how this whole set up came about. For avid TART readers and followers, you already know that Justin and TART member Christopher Eaves, the brains behind Deathdealers: The Series, which is still in the works. They have switched gears to work on Courage to get Dealers up and running hardcore. They've acquired some fancy new equipment and moving along rather nicely. Support Courage, and Deathdealers will have a better chance of seeing the light of day. So check it out!

One more post for today as I hang out in the oversized rec room of the BX Mall. War is tough when the AC is on too high and it's hard to resist the appeal of fast food. Anyway, here are a few things I'm excited about.

My favorite band, and pretty much the reason I got into the online critique forum in the first place is blowing right the fuck up!!! Yes, I could only be talking about the brilliant Scott & Company known as No Go Know (use the link, they have a gret new website!) Their sophomore release Time Has Nothing To Do With It (TART Productions Best Album of 2009!!) has had great reactions from sources all over. And now....
They have graced the cover of Performer Monthly. Hells Yes Brothers!!! Keep it going guys!

Got an e-mail from friend/musician/Green Grotto Records affiliate David Minne informing me of his completion of his debut album, Pop Sarcastic . Surely in a matter of days, the album will be available for purchase in every format imaginable. Be on the lookout. It's going to be a fantastic piece of art! David Minne is probably one of the most likable artists around.

And of course it wouldn't be right not to mention the exciting sophomore full length release from good friend and artistic genious Robin Grey. His album Strangers With Shoes is available now. The album contains several songs I have already had the pleasure of writing about including two tracks from his I Love Leonard Cohen EP that was absolutely fucking fantastic. As well as the stellar cut "Younger Looking Skin" which I did an track review for Fensepost.com. Expect an album review for this one coming very soon.

Canada's finest indie pop band The Rest have released a free Book/Ep entitled Cried Wolf. It is the story of the boy who cried wolf like a little bitch set to an eery display of indie rock goodness. Like everything else The Rest has accomplished, it is incredible. Their album Everyone All At Once (which was #3 on my Top 37 1/2 Albums of 2009) will finally get a world wide release on March 15th. Check their website for more details. And, of course, watch for an album review dropping shortly.

There are several more artists with albums coming out this year that I am extremely excited about (i.e. Larkin Grimm, Jasmine Riley) But, I will have to do a bit more research and figure out some more details in order to give these fine artists the credit they deserve.

Web Series, Popeye's Chicken, and Info Highway Glory!

January is almost a wrap. My first month in the not so desolate yet holy depressing region of Qatar known as Al Udeid is coming to a close. I've learned Skype, and managed to have some great video chats with my beautiful wife. She's even more stunning in physical motion. A picture might say a thousand words, but a pixelated video format conjures up words and thoughts that might not be appropriate to announce.

I realized today that I would be dreaming if I thought I could keep this blog a bi-weekly post. I guess the loyal reader(s?) out there will have to settle for random updates. And since most of my work is at Fensepost.com anyway, this serves little purpose. Just another social networking device for the always cunning self to exploit the "hard" work I have been doing in the world of internet album and artist reviews.

I've put together story ideas for new screenplays and shorts. Some potential I believe, but nothing that serious. Nothing worthy of internet submission as of yet, so that must mean nothing at all right? My good friend Justin Rister (Deathdealers) has been cast for a new web series that shows alot of promise. Especially for fans of the hit Fox series Firefly. It's entitled, Courage: The Series, and you can check out their Facebook for more details. Deathdealers director/TART Productions family member Christopher Eaves will be working with the project as well. Deathdealers is still underway, filming, and proving to be better and better each day. Although I have sort of stepped away as a social networking guru for Dealers, I still have the honor and pleasure to message Justin or Chris for the latest updates. I haven't been keeping in touch to well as of lately, but I will be sure to keep everyone updated as well. And surely I will get around to editing my first screenplay, A Gathering Storm, and start on these new ideas, so I can desperately abuse Justin Rister for all his recent success. What good are friends in the business if you can't exploit the shit out of them right? Just kidding Justin! But, seriously, help a brother out!

Make Me Laugh Motherfucker!

Went and saw an Armed Forces Standup Comedy Show here on base (Al Udeid, Qatar) last night. It was a stellar performance and the producer of some much needed laughter. Something that seems so damn hard to come by these days. The comedians were Matt Baetz, Lauren Ashley Bishop, and Johnny Cardinale. All very funny. But fucking Matt Baetz was a god damn riot. Don't get me wrong, Bishop had a great bit about white and black women watching Paranormal Activity, and Cardinale had my dying as he ripped apart Jack Johnson (which I have a wierd "I know it's not "hip" motherfuckers, but I dig some Jack" attitued towards). But, Matt Baetz fucking killed it! His whole persona and geek like charisma was absolutely perfect. I stand by the thought that he should have been billed last. I might stop through for their third and fourth shows tonight to see if they switched up the order. Baetz has a BLOG that is a great comedic read as well.

Nothing else new to announce. The album reviews have been stagnant lately. Plan on doing some up today. But, I'm enjoying this fucking day off and their is nothing anyone is going to do about it. Take care everyone. Natch!

Been a few weeks. I've pretty much settled myself in here in the wealthy country of Qatar. This is unlike any other deployment I've ever been on. I traveled through California, Maine, and Germany to get here. Watch several shitty plane movies and had a few good moments along the way. Then I landed here, and well, here i am. But, given the massive amount of things that have happened since my last post, I better get going.

The Kordan review above was actually written in a hotel room at Travis AFB in California over a bottle of E&J. It was also the first time I "broke the fourth wall" in music blogging if you will. I throw in some personal notes. It was my first night away from my family and I was dying inside. I've written three more reviews since I've been here (see The Scruffs), but really been just adjusting to the new digs.

Deathdealers had their premiere on New Year's Eve. Seems like everything went well. Though wifi is all around me, my hours and a time difference throws off much communication. More detailed info is sure to come. Until then friends.....keep your unit on you!

Off He Goes....

I am enjoying what will surely be my last easy Sunday morning in the confines of my real life. One child on my arm, one rolling on the ground, another nestled asleep. Wife at rest as well. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on the tube. These are the times I'm going to miss very much. The simple tranquility that has become my weekend existence.
I am just awaiting a phone call, and reporting instructions to head to my third deployed location. It never gets any easier. Although I am sure to be placed in an "easy" location (Al Udeid AB, Qatar, just outside of Doha), it doesn't mean it will be easy. Even during my second trip to Iraq, with rockets a blaring, it was the distance that was hard. I love my family. And I am going to miss them. This is what will be hard. You can sit and rationalize with the "It could always be worse...." But, this sort of optimism only creates false hope. It won't be a bad trip. But, it certainly won't be easy.
So, before I ship off, here are couple bits of news to pass on:

Just prior to Christmas I had a track review for The Dandy Warhols' "Little Drummer Boy". This track is amazing. And I dig "Last Junkie On Earth", but overall, I have some strange personal conflict with these guys I think I need to figure out. It's great that their getting my boys from 1776 up and around to tour the land and spread the good cheer of their saultry sound. But, intuition tells me to watch the fuck out.

Got a shout out from The Union Records Blagh, for naming one of their artists, the illustrious and wonderful No Go Know's, album Time Has Nothing To Do With It the #1 album of the year. As well as numerous thanks and praises for the list. To bad Myspace's bitch ass wasn't able to help out considering they won't link to Blogger. I'm thinking I may have tried to beat off the cock of the wrong social networking site for too long. Looks like that cult we call Facebook is something one must succomb to. I'm going to miss all the sweet times since July of '05, but moving on is a part of life I guess.

I wasn't going to number these at all. I think too much hype is thrown into what number the album lands on. I believe in a redux version of the Ricky Bobby philsophy, "If you're not first, you're last." I would say: "If you're not in the Top 5, you still made the list". Therefore, everybody is a winner!
I'm pretty happy with the list. You know it's been a good year when you can drop 37 1/2 names quickly(Why 37 & 1/2....I am a massive Kevin Smith fan. Hopefully that doesn't stir you instantly away. And the 1/2 is for an EP I just couldn't leave out). And it doesn't hurt to have your favorite band release a double album during the year and it's their best yet. That secures one spot. I know there will be conflicts with my choices. That's just part of the end of year routine I guess.

Just another relaxing Saturday morning here in the flourishing ghettos of Spokane, Washington. Stereophonics are TV recording at Abbey Road. I just watched a great episode of Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... Really just kicking back and kicking off what is going to be a nice staycation before I leave for, to quote the great Steve Sessions, "somewhere between Iraq and a hard place". I'm working on adjusting my heart to the fact that this daily life I know and love will soon be ripped apart. But, it's not even Christmas yet, so let's stray from that for now.

About a month ago I need a sort of interview/questionnaire with Michael Phillips from The Fenbi International Superstars. I've covered them at Fensepost. And I've been a fan of his since he was the bassist for a pop/punk band known as The Young Immortals. Fenbi is another one of those groups I always want to support all the time. So, I weaseled my way into getting said review posted over at Crappy Indie Music, which is by far the premiere blog for Portland. Goldie Davich knows her shit. Ben Meyercord picks out the best of the best when it comes to shows. And since Fenbi fucking loves their hometown, and don't plan on going anywhere any time soon, I felt it would be in their best interest to get some face time over at CIMB. Alarm rings. 0630. Shit. Even after getting one more extra hour of sleep than usual, I still feel like shit. But, the day must begin. I guess.

I wake up Grandma, she's been in town four days, and now it's back to Reno with the old lady. After some last minute conversation as we wait for the traumatic ice to slide off the car, we head out. It's 4 degrees outside. Literally. It's madness out here on the plains. Driving me absolutely insane. But, everything continues to grow on. Except for the grass out here. That is fucked for months.

Despite the chilly air, Grandma begins her process to leave Spokane...until next time. And I drive to the base to begin my pretend work day. When I arrive at the shop, no one notices I am about an hour and a half late. At this point, more folks are surprised if I actually am around. Once you reach a point in pre deployment status, you are on your own. So, I down some Rip It's and Sonomas and chit chat with the rest of my colleauges not to excited to do any real work in these freezing tempatures. I figured it was time for me to roll out.

Sitting on my passenger seat is a bag of sperm. Well, it's a bag. And inside the bag is a small cup filled with the remains of a fantasy of my wife and Selma Hayek bathing themselves in a hot tub full of Australian wine. I'm headed to the Urologist to see if my vasectomy was a success. I decide it would probably be best to change cars. I always feel horrible driving the car around with three car seats in the back and no one in them. So I head back to my glorious home in the ghetto. I walk in to find it is still pretty quiet for 9 a.m. or so. What the hell is this? Is it only a 5 a.m. wake up call when I have a day off work? I charge upstairs to find my two eldest playing oh so nicely together in perfect harmony in their bedroom. My wife sleeps calmly on our own bed with a beautiful 4 month old girl in her arms. It's so calm. IT'S A FUCKING TWLIGHT ZONE IN HERE!

So, I head downstairs kids now in tow begging for sustances. Needy little buggers aren't they? I stumble around on the laptop. Check Fensepost. Jets Overhead review I wrote went live. Sweet. The kids eat their Life and move straight to the coloring books. Melissa is still in a slumber. She awakes just as I am about to leave. With a bag of nasty thought remains, and My Boring Ass Life by Kevin Smith in hand for later (keep reading, notice the influence?).

I only let the Jeep run for about 5 minutes or so, therefore it is fucking cold. Cigarettes do their best to drown on the chill, but they only help so much. Heading over the Maple Street Bridge, I take my daily gaze into downtown Spokane. Dammit I love living here. It may not be the biggest or brightest city, but after 5 years in middle America, this is splendid. I can see the Deaconess Medical Center where I am to deposit my seedless (hopefully) man juice. Childishly thought about how funny it would be if my the office was called Hermoth. So I would be depositing my sample in "Her Mouth". Get it? Yeah

I hate being looked at like a fucking midget circus clown when I walk through the city in uniform. It's just a job people. I appreciate your support, but I'm just trying to visit the clinic to assure I have no more kids. That's all folks. Celebrities have the paparazzi. I have regular everyday people clapping in airports. It's better than shit thrown at your face like some would 50 years ago, but still, I'm just like everyone else. Broke, overweight, and constantly finding ways to enjoy myself.

I deposit my bag of wet dreams with very little ackwardness. I would imagine their are very few surprises when you are a nurse or clerk at a Urologist office. So, I just pressed on. Within the freezing Jeep, I spend off from South Hill back to the base. To do what.....no idea?

I arrived to the base with about an hour to spare before it was lunch time. I decided I shoud make a stop at base supply to pick up what I would find out to be a zip locked bag of DEET for my upcoming deployment. I call my troop Nick to make sure his ass is doing what he needs to. And he is. What a good kid. His arm throbs from an Anthrax shot. After 5 or 6 of those, you begin to toughen up a bit.

Lunch rolls through. We finish up Hot Fuzz in the break room and then I am off to my glorious extra duty as a "pecker checker" or "weiner watcher" or my personal favorite: "cock gazer". Drug Test observer might be more appropriate. Not a glorious job at all. But, I spend the majority of the time reading My Boring Ass Life while The Dark Knight plays in the background. I contemplate doing one of those diary entries myself. I realize quickly that I am NOT famous, and no one would really care. But, maybe Wiggy would. So I plan to do it anyway.

Weiner watch duty is over after a couple hours. What to do now? I choose option A and decide to outprocess a bit. After a couple stops, I have nothing left to do. Contemplate heading home early, but decide it might not be a good idea. But, when I arrive back at the shop, it's a ghost town. Commanders Call. Sweet. I get to miss a CC with a viable excuse. But, that inevitable means that I am in the shop when the phone rings with a distraught customer who can't turn their computers on. Adam and Brian stumble in with their viable excuses for missing the CC, so we decide we might as well go take care of this.

Turns out it was another space heater. Those things are like Kryptonite to electricians. They are a fire hazard, and the fuck everything up. Turns out the guy who called was an old friend of my Dad's who came and crashed at our house in South Dakota during the Sturgis Rally in 2004. So, we were nice and didn't cut the space heater's cord to prevent it from menacing us ever again. Which apparantely we are authorized to do. Maybe next time?

The rest of the work day becomes mindless conversations and storytelling. The usual. Nick and I decide to take a truck out, get some gas, and smoke some cigs until 5 just to stay out of sight. We chop it up on supervisor/subordinate topics and such until we feel we have wasted enough time to return. It is dark now.

I arrive home hungry. Melissa took no meat out for dinner. Sweet! Digornio pizza night! I cook 'em up while Melissa breaks out the bomb of the day with her entire idea of rearranging every bedroom in the house. I don't like it. But, I just can't get her mother's influence out of her. She has to move furniture at least every two weeks. I swear it's a disease. But, in the end, she always gets her way.

We finish our pizza, and move to our respected laptops. I have a dozen e-mails, only 6 matter. Good day. One is from Fense resending a press release for King of Rocksprings. Shit. It was released today. Another unscheduled & missed deadline. Their was no official deadline. I probably just should have known. Oh well, he doesn't seem concerned. I shall work on in tonight as I watch DVR'd episodes of Full Throttle Saloon. What a good show. TruTV is really captivating. I am excited to know that next week is the season finale. My good friend Yung Temp did a performance on the last night that was on the last night of the rally. But, based on the premis of the show, I don't think his performance will air. Oh well, I know he was there.

I take a bit longer than usual to write the review than normal. But I complete it. Like it. Even got to use my first "Tiger Woods & Whores" joke. Mom calls. We chat for a half hour about the latest drama involving my ex-step dad. Usual stuff lately. He's an ass. Not worth the agony. Almost completely cleared from her life. We are both thankfull to still have relationships with Blake and Kayla. They will always be my siblings. And they will always be her kids. Their father can't stop that. Everything will be fine.

The night closes in. Sophia is tired as shit. It's time for them to hit the hay. Melissa and lounge around the living room watching a George Lopez re-run. I log on to Deathdealers myspace to do some social networking stuff. Read Ben Meyercord's Live Music Picks and Crappy Indie Music The Blog, wish I lived in Portland. By the time DVR'd episodes of Family Guy come on, I realize I may pass out on the couch. Shit. Got to get up to bed. Start to think about this blog diary thing I want to do. Should I really do it? Well, what can it hurt. I felt like I had a good day. Might as well.

5 a.m. I awoke on the couch freezing. Shit, never made it up to bed. Oh well, maybe tomorrow. Time for more sleep.

Not much new to report to you the fine reader(s?). I am fresh off a nice weeklong vacation back in my hometown of Longview, Washington. I enjoyed a fine thanksgiving, reunions with family and friends, and a complete disregard of a man that used to be my fill in father. But, that is personal stuff that has no need in the good range of emotions I am feeling as of now.

I am back in good old Spokane and within a month from heading off to Doha, Qatar for six months. Should promise to be a productive deployment. I will be writing every chance I get. But, until then, I have a pot of coffee and a stack of albums to review, as well as an evergrowing folder of press releases to check out. And here is what I have for you today:

A New Horizon

There has been much to be excited about as of recently. First of all, it's been over a week since my vasectomy, and things are almost back to normal.

But, more importantly, the little project I have been talking about, Deathdealers, is really kicking in to gear. And they have a new member.....Me! Well, to an extent anyway. I've sort of taken over the social networking aspect of the project. Living in Spokane, having a full time government job, and having three kids sets me away from all the intense shooting and other going on's happening in Portland/Vancouver/Kelso, basically the other side of state. But, I have found a way to weasel my way into the action. So here is my plug for myself, as well as all the pretty little updates for Deathdealers, the web's most exciting undead web series:

- I've really been trying to get the Deathdealers Myspace page going full stream. Myspace may be declining in popularity to Facebook. But, as far as artistic promotion, it can't be topped. So go there and see what I have been up to.

- I've started up the Deathdealers Twitter page. Not a whole lot to do there, but many updates shall happen here. And while you are there, stop by and say hi to series founder/actor/writer/ Justin Rister

- I haven't hit up much of the Deathdealers Facebook page, since I am scared to death of it, but there is one, and Christopher Eaves (my hero!) keeps it pretty well updated. I should start working with that one, just gotta get over the fear.

- And of course, nothing could be complete without the Deathdealers Blog, cleverly titled "Kill The Infected"

If you visit the myspace page today, you can catch I quick 30 second teaser which has a wonderful cameo by none other than writer/director Christopher Eaves. Some very good stuff.

Yes, things are getting intense. Comicon is in the future. The series is expected to go live sometime in the beginning of the year. I've had the pleasure of reading through some of the episodes, and hot damn it is good. If you thought 28 Days/Weeks Later were spectacular. You have not seen shit. This is going to be fantastic.

I good bit of nostalgia sets in with this project as well. It's been almost 10 years since Justin Rister and I teamed up for a freshmen year drama class. Our class put on a silly little farce entitled "Caught In The Act". I can't remember what exactly the play was about, but I can remember Justin & I playing a sort of Ben Affleck & Jason Lee silly duo. I remember I dropped my pants for some reason. It was a good time. And now, Justin is doing his thing in a big way. Very proud to say the least.

Late Night Cigarettes & Hand Grenades

So, I've been just lounging around recovering from my vasectomy. It went smoothly. A shot of novacaine to the kids wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. And bottle of whiskey the night of the recovery didn't hurt either. We all have our own techniques.

Another benefit is that I have had plenty of time to write. I've been diligently working on getting some cool new albums & videos ready to go live at Fensepost.com throughout the week. I've also found the oppurtunity to do a few updates for the Fensepost Myspace page. Nothing serious, just trying to maintain. I did selfishly throw my photo under the Contributors folder. I felt it was due time. I've been contributing their for over a year now. It has been a great ride thus far. With 100+ reviews done, I have had the oppurtunity to hear some great new music I most likely would have never known. I've watched artists flourish. I still get a kick in the heart when I hear Manchester Orchestra all over the airwaves (105.7 The Peak, here in Spokane plays them religiously). Yes, I have had alot of fun. There has been alot of progressive as of lately as well. If anything, I have a wonderful hobby.

So, as far as work goes, I have a review for Hyperstory's self titled debut album out today. Check it out HERE.

I'm getting a vasectomy tomorrow. Can't wait. Got a couple album reviews at Fensepost the last couple of days, and I've turned in several others that will appear in the next couple weeks or so. I've been doing what I can to keep the creative juices flowing after 6 weeks of having military leadership skills smashed into my skull. Here is a piece for Fieldhead and their album (released on tuesday) They Shook Hands For Hours. As well as one for Alan Samardjian's The Big Beauty. Both are spectacular albums that deserve a good listening. Be sure to check them out after you check out my reviews. It's a good thing.

I've recieved information that mastering is wrapping up on two very important albums being released in the coming months. One being the debut album from Portland rockers 1776. They will be having a CD release party at the Wonder Ballroom w/The Dandy Warhols. The Dandies finally made their union official by signing 1776 to their label, Beat The World Records. This promises to be a simply amazing masterpiece. Our good friend Tyler Averett wrote a great feature on them at Fensepost a little while ago. Check it out HERE.

The second would be from folksmith Avid Verlaine (a newly developed moniker for singer/songwriter David Minne) courtesy of the the previously profiled Green Grotto Records. Again, this is going to be a great fucking album.

I found myself in a sense of self hatred for supporting the television ratings of social demons and hellbound dictators of the communication world. Yes, I watched Glenn Beck today. What a stupid decission on my part.

But, in all fairness, Beck is merely a spokesperson for the new agenda of hate. The GOP has developed a loyal gathering of morons and trust fund babies who fear the "big bad government". They make me fucking sick. The say Obama is a "marxist" because he cares about what happens to America, and wants to do his job by helping us out. They say the White House is full of "socialists" because they want the power away from the 1% of the country. Well my friends, if this is the case. And if Fox News is right....I, therefore, am a socialist to the bone. I believe in freedom and rights for all. Sorry about that.

So last night was the finishing touches on my Airman Leadership School. I graduated. I am now a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. Time to get that money!

I am sick. It really just hit me today. The beginnings of flu, cold, whatever it is in pig's agenda to take over the world (i.e. animal farm, real). Whatever it is, I feel like this. Things are running as usual these days. I am engrossed in the world of military doctorine and porfessionalism. Exciting stuff, I guess. It is going well. I haven't had any real tests thus far, only those of nature. Next week shall show how much I have really learned. But, it's 9:30 at night, I have dodgeball practice in the morning, so I shall make this brief.

One of my favorite new alternative bands, and good friends, Godfed Static (of Elma, WA status) are having a HUGE HUGE gig coming soon. The Kurt Cobain Memorial Foundation is putting on their annual benefit show, Lounge Acts, in Kurt's hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. And Godfed Static will be a supporting act to.........CANDLEBOX!!! Yes, Candlebox. One of the mot underrated talents of the grunge act. I give a virtual middle finger to all those who deny the power of these guys. They were fucking amazing in the 90's. And they are still tearing shit up as well as/better than their counterparts (i.e. that abortion that Pearl Jam calls a new album). Fuck my life, I would give so much to be there. So, do my a favor - Be there! Take pictures. Masterbate with your own tears when "Cover Me" plays. Their is a great line up for this show. Not to mention Godfed Static is one the of the greatest hard rocking alternative based groups out right now. This will be absolutely fantastic. No doubt in my mind. Sir Cobain deserves no less.

Exuding excellence and me time

I'm pretty pissed I didn't reach my goal for September. 8 posts a month was what I was shooting for. Even if they were as simple minded and half hearted as this one was. But, like I have mentioned many times before, I am going through some intense changes.

I am well into my Airman Leadership School. I am learning to lead the way to success for my future......blah blah blah. I don't even care, I don't expect you to either. So here is what I got.

Fense has been a great friend and editor to a simple minded fuck such as myself. He managed to sneak an older review I wrote onto the Fensepost scene. The National Beekeeepers Society would be the main focal point here, and you can see it all HERE.

I am set to graduate from this class on the 29th of this month, so things will most likely slow down even more. I will post when I can. 8 posts might be tough. Tonight was my first night of "me" time in a while. I am enjoying it. I will go to sleep now. Sleep is "me" time. So fuck "you". Goodnight. Talk to you soon.

It's been a strange week. I had two days of monstrous effort of work. Followed by two days of crawling around in dead grass, leaves, and snake shit playing GI Joe. And the the real dirty stuff came. Airmen Leadership School. Ahh, the frustrations have already begun. But, it will be over in about a month, and the debautary shall continue until I disinnegrate into time and space in the disgustingly rich country of Qatar. Until then....

My highlight story has to be about that skinny, handsome, and now ten years older guy in the foxhide. Sir Wiggington. What a character.

Wiggy has written a few blogs as of recently. Yes, our hero of the woodlands, the poet of the trees, has discovered.......Astrology? Yes, and it is quite fascinating. Check out his blog for all the excitement and wonder that the stars and our good friend can offer.

Because of this week's intolerability and the beginning of my professional career, I have not produced much more work at Fensepost, or anywhere for that matter. This in turn would mean that I don't have much to share. I did have a piece on the insane british pop/punk female trio Hotpants Romance a few days ago.

But, the big thing that did get put out there this week is the addition of TART Productions co-founder Tyler Averett to the Fensepost world. I gave him the task of writing a feature on the recently signed (to the Dandy Warhol's Beat The World label) batch of young friends, 1776. It is a beautifully written feature. Proving once again, that Tyler has an abundance of gonzo inspired talent that I really need to catch up with. Check it out here.

I have some studying to do today. But, if I find a minute in the later hour, I hope to break out the old notepad and polish up a couple of reviews. We shall see. No promises. None.

But what might very well be the biggest news - a little piece called Deathdealer!

Yes, our good friend Christopher Eaves has teamed up with former pro snowboarder (now screenwriter/director/actor) Justin Rister in the filming of a trailer for the upcoming web series Deathdealer, which will be a correspondence to an actual film. Justin Rister is, aside from being a fellow high school alum, has been a great friend and an enoromous talent. This very well may be the biggest thing any of my close friends have been a part of. This has the potential of being huge. But, I'm awaiting more details and the release of the official trailer, blog, etc. before I go mouthing off on something I don't know jack about. So here are the facts as of now:

There is a Deathdealer Facebook page. There is some pertinent information here, but nothing too invasive.

Christopher Eaves has been signed on as Assistant Director. He will also have a bit part that should be very interesting.

Once the trailer comes out, this will be big news. But for now, the suspense is on. I hope to plan an interview with Justin and Chris fielding some Q&A type advertisement. Check out Justin Rister's Myspace Page for some photos from the shooting of the official trailer.

Once again, more to come. This has the potential of being fucking huge. We shall see.

This is very important people. You will see me plastering this all over myspace and twitter (I might even venture over to that bastard child facebook for a minute as well). The abnormally talented group The Gabe Dixon Band have been nominated for a Nashville Music Award. A big one. Pop/Rock album of the year, alongside Kings of Leon and The Raconteurs. This is huge....and they need your help defeating the Kings and Jack White and friends. You can VOTE HERE.

If you have not heard of The Gabe Dixon Band, it is about time you do. Their tunes are just so damn happy. Especially in a time of such emo influenced self hatred. I saw them live at Berbati's in Portland a year ago. They were not the headliners, but they stole the fucking show by far. And as many of their fans will already know, it is most likely their amazing cover of Bob Marley's "Is This Love" that makes them so bloody special. In fact, it has become quite the gimmick to have your cell phone ready to record this magical experience (which features one of the coolest instruments ever made, the melodica). The group compiled a collection of said videos and made a great music video you can see HERE. It is beautiful. Of course, their original work is golden as well, but this is amazing! These guys are by far the greatest band in pop rock right now. Gabe played piano for Paul McCartney! C'mon what else do you need!

Please take a moment to help these guys out. It would mean alot to me. I love the Kings of Leon. I have been a fan for years. But, that fucking "Use Somebody" has burned my ears to almost no existence. Now The Raconteurs, they are amazing. But, I don't think anyone deserves such a distinguished award in their own hometown as The Gabe Dixon Band. Have a heart. Thank you. Now go....be a hero.

It's All About Personality

For those unaware, there is something very important about me that must be shared. I am an alcoholic. But, more importantly as well as relevant, I spent 5 years living in the desolate and sadistic Middle America. This is not to say that Rapid City, South Dakota is a modern day concentration camp. But, for some, it might be close.

I was taking a stroll through my new neighborhood today. Double stroller guiding, and newborn fastened to my wife's chest with a Snuggie. Yes, one of those outings with the whole family. The one's where people stop and look at us wandering what the hell our problem is. We can't be more than 19 or 20 years old with three kids strolling through the crummiest neighborhood in medium sized Spokane, Washington. Of course we know that there are several asteriks and corrections to be made, but let them watch and fuck off on their patios of doom. But, this is not the true reasoning for this diatribe.

The sidewalks around West Central Spokane are fucked. There is no other way to put it. There are hundreds of houses over a hundred years old, but the trees that seemed to be planted directly in front of each house are probably older. And their 19th century roots are seriously tearing the fuck out of the concrete slabs, most of which were put in prior to the 1950's. And this my friends is where the revelations began. I live in what some suburban dwellers might call "the hood". But let's go back a few years before my latest journey back to the great state of Washington.

The year was 2004. I was freshly married, and my wife and I were actually 19 or 20. We had jsut spent 8 months drinking and fornicating in the sad state of Texas. The closest thing we ever had to college years was in that tiny apartment in Wichita Falls. We were sad the times had to end, but looking forward to what the future would hold. Unfortunately, we knew we would have to make our own adventures because the grand U.S. Air Force had decided that my first station would be Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota. One of those states you just forget about and move on with your life. 700,000 people - in an entire state. For some that doesn't seem possible. But for the midwest portion of this country, it is completely fathomable.

Being 19 years old, and coming from the Hillbilly infatuated land of Kelso Longview Washington, it was exciting to hear that the Air Force offered absolutely FREE houses located right on the base. Of course, I had grown up living in these free houses, so it wasn't a shocker really. But, the idea of me and my wife having a two bedroom, two bathroom house with a yard and a garage for one of our two cars - was absolutely crazy. It was paradise.

Of course, we soon realized that there was really nothing to do in South Dakota. This is just fact. Yes, we were living in one of the largest tourist traps in the country. Mt. Rushmore was at our fingertips. And we went. Unimpressive the first time (I had actually been there when I was 14, but it was a different sight when you minus teenage angst). Equally so the following dozen or so times we would go. So what did we decide to do? Well, sex. Lots of it. But, it was lots of sex with the intentions of having a baby. And that we did. As the story goes, I am now up to three, and scheduled for a vasectomy in November. So there you go.

So there we were, living in suburban blunder with our small child. We would relocate to a three bedroom, three bedroom house down the street. Then we would have another child. Yes, things were good. But, as the years piled on, it suddenly became far less romantic to live amongst peers. We were just like everyone else. We had our kids, cars, and my job that was only minutes away from my house. Same would go for all of us. We were all from various different states and backgrounds, but we had all found ourselves in the same place and time. We were frozen. We were comfortable, but we were frozen. 80 percent of us were desperate to leave South Dakota and make it just another horror story. The other 20 percent were insane. So, after a half a decade there, we were alloted to leave (of course, I had to sign another 4 years of my life over to Uncle Sam).

And this brings me to the now. I live in a fucking dump. The roads are horrible. There are remainders of of a train trolley tracks that haven't been operational in over 60 years or so. All the corner grocerys have bars on the windows. As well, as the drunks digging for change for their next tall can of King Cobra malt liqour (Broadway Foods is your best choice at 99 cents a can, $1.08 after taxes, this is important). And the middle aged black man up from California working his ass off to collect every loose aluminum can he can find for his next can of King Cobra malt liqour (His name is Demetri, and he is awesome!).

There's the pentecostal churches; the cars in the yard; kids on bikes with no shoes; loud music late at night; all night bus stops; nurses assistants; construction workers; pimps; whores; military members with too many kids; homelessness; meth; thieves; butchers; misfits; etc.

And I could not be happier.

Unlike my stay in the vast praire land, I live with real people. I know this may come off as a spoiled white military brat moves to the hood and falls in love with the danger. First of all, as bad as I may have made it sound, it is not. I am more in fear of living on a country road filled with Dahmers and Chainsaw massacres than I am living in a downtown region. Second of all, no. What is so infatuating about this neighborhood is it's likeliness to the same neighborhood I spent my formative years in. Where the deboturay is evident, but only seems disturbing from the outside eyes. This is real life people. This is the real America. The non photo shopped version of the world we live in.

But, of course, to some extent, this is just another adventure for me. With my occupation, you can never plan on being anyhwere to long. Through my childhood as a military child, I went to countless elementary schools and lived across the globe. It's just how it works. It's part of the thrill. So, for now, I am a resident of Felony Flats in Spokane, Washington. Former resident of Levittown esque housing in South Dakota. The worlds are completely different. And it is exciting to say the least. And without really needing to say more, I prefer it here.

What the future holds next is non too sure. Maybe a nice quiant home in a European village somewhere. Or maybe more on base residence in said European countries. Or, an upper middle class in the southern U.S. I just can't know. But for now, I can safely say that I have viewed two seperate worlds, and solidify my stance of caring more for the wretched and digraded side of America. It's all about personality people.

sex, grynch, and rock and/or roll

I can always tell that I have been slacking on the writing duties by how much I have been reading. And I have been doing quite a bit as of lately. I breezed through Palahniuk's Lullaby, and nearing the end of Bukowski's Hollywood. Maybe it's the subject matter that is just too drawing to avoid. Or I am just plain lazy. Either way, I really need to get some real shit done. This is true.

The most obvious news I have for the TART world is in the picture. No, Shakira has not come to sweep me off my feet and fondle me on the plane ride back down to Colombia. But, the dreams are sure to keep on coming. The real news is that my favorite wordsmith Grynch is repping Seattle in big ways, to include an interview in Billboard magazine. His name is on the cover to. When you are done staring at her chest, look left, he's right there. I love to see when great things happen to this cat. There are so many obvious reasons why one might simply brush him aside as someone who will never be a true hip hop musician. But, time and time again he pushes forward and proves that he has skills and is going to use the shit out of them. It is guys like Grynch that turning hip hop music into a legitimate art. Billboard Magazine has recognized his importance, and you should here what our man has to say HERE, at the online version.

Grynch's next album, Chemistry 1.5 will be available in stores and online October 6th. And you better believe I will be doing a write up on this guy for Fensepost. I had a steady week at Fensepost with reviews for artists like Jon and Roy, Robert Gomez, and Benjamin Bear. All very good bodies of work. And to clarify before you ever read them, I have nothing against Eddie Vedder and I loved his Into The Wild album. But, he really does sound like Count Chocula at times. It's in the Jon and Roy track review if you are now curious. But, wait a minute, I just remembered, Pearl Jam has a new single on the airwaves.....and it fucking sucks! I swear on my life that I am a huge fan of PJ, maybe I'm just too critical of my favorite artists. But, c'mon have you heard their new single? It's terrible, disgusting, and down right disturbing. Why are the founding fathers of grunge sounding like panty waste Fall Out Boy copy cats. Glad I finally got that off my chest.

Sweet desperation and surpressed anxiety I hope the day is better than the morning. One bad batch of coffee can ruin everything. But, an ice cold Rip It Energy drink will do the trick. I know I am getting old when the prior night's whiskey binge destroys my chest and burns my heart into a back curdling pain. Thank goodness for Tums and chive and onion cream cheese over onion bagel. The Marlboros probably aren't helping. Palahniuk's Lullaby is really adding vaseline to the burn. Just another Sunday morning for the deranged I suppose.

Last week was eventful. I had reviews ran throughout pretty much the whole week. Three of the days at least. A great thing really since I was basically absent from it all for a while there. Tuesday had 28 Degrees Taurus, Wednesday was a day off for Fense as well. Happy 29th Fense! Thursday was the lovely Breanna Paletta with her wonderful folked out ways. P.S. Hipsters of Portland, try not to be offended, they're only jokes. Thursday also belonged to the clever Greek inspired Hermit Thrushes, a double dose of TART for that ass. And Fense would wrap me up for the week with Friday's review of Anomie Belle's touching new album. And there are bit more pending, so watchout for next week. Especially for one very special review by a guest writer to be named later.

As well as a performance from Cyrus Grape, who is as equally impressive. I know nothing of Crazy Dumb Saints, but if they are put on the bill with these folks, they are most likey pretty fucking rockin. I wish like hell I was able to get to this. And if you are able to, you will NOT want to miss this beautiful experience.

There is very little mainstream literature out there to be proud of, but we can be proud of Jess. I ran into him at a ghetto mart near my house. One of those, "you look familiar but...". That's why I love books still. You don't know your heroes by their appearance. I would recognize Stephen King maybe. I've seen Palahniuk before, but I might let him pass right on by with no recognition. Now, Stephen Hawkings, yeah that's a no brainer. He's the one with the glasses right? But, so may great writers I would not recognize. Anonymous wonders really.

Area Man to Revolutionize Album Sales!

Well, what a grand morning. I'm enjoying a great sandwich of brown sugar ham and fresh tomatoes that were a gift from my neighbor's garden. The effects of a tasy malt liqour are wearing off, and the cheap black coffee is skewing through my body burning away the badness. And I am not at work. There will be no "where were you in when the towers fell?" conversations. Yes, it is going to be a good day. September 11th is simply a moment in history. A sad one, sure. But, I just don't want to talk about it since there is SO much good news to discuss in regards to advancement in the TART Productions world.

Our very own Heavy Metal artist/critic and film enthusiast/critic Adam Mattson (the "A" in TART) found out that he will be the newest employee at the famed Just Music & Movies record shop in Longview, WA. Yes, for 40 hours a week our main man Adam will get paid to sit around and talk about music. It will almost be a requirement for him to wear a band t-shirt to his job (which, he always does anyway!). His excitement is amazing and well deserved. He has landed his dream job, that is for damn sure. Congratulations to you sir!

Even more good news, musician/poet/writer Tyler Averett (the first "T" in TART) was accepted at Portland State University. Yes, the man who recently recieved his Associates Degree after almost 7 years is keeping the ambition rolling as he works his way towards a major in English and a minor in Film Studies. This is extremely exciting news that makes me feel all giddy and shit knowing that my friend is going to do it for real this time. Through several battles, turnpikes, and angry alligators of the mind, sir Averett is one step closer to finding his path in this world. He still has a ways to go, but the direction is set. Congratulations to you as well sir!

And as for the "R" in TART, well, I'm just chillin'. I head to Airman Leadership School in ten days, most likely. And, by the end of October, I will recieved my fancy new stripe.

It's also a must to point out that before we were TART Productions, we were Gentlemen. And even when TART drops into thin air and becomes a distant or forgotten memory, we will always be Gentlemen. When are bodies are wiped off existence and buried deep beneath the earth, we will be Gentlemen. It is our duty to be this way. And we take it very seriously. Most of the time. So, once again, congratulations to all our recent success stories. And of course...HRUMPH!!

My hometown newspaer, The Hillbilly Gazette (a.ka. The Daily News of Longview) did a nice expose' on an old friend and screenwriter as he made a trip back to Kelso-Longview before he takes off to Mexico to shoot the breeze, as well as development on a new film. Yes, Mr. Rister has moved from the pro Snowboarding scene into the Hollywood world. Nice. Check out the article here. There has been alot of "hating" on Justin as of lately. They will get over it. Seattle native Grynch will be an opening act for Clipse and Slick Rick at The Showbox in Seattle in support of Sneaker Pimps, the world's largest sneaker show. Grynch is an extremely talented artist I covered a while ago and will continue to do so. Very nice guy. If you are in or around Seatown, I would suggest this. You get to see Grynch, Clipse, and the legend Slick Rick and several other artists for $20? Oh hell yeah!

I've really got nothing as far as my own work. I finally put a few album review together for Fensepost and a couple should be showing up next week. It felt good to get back into the feel of things, and I am happy with what developed. Hopefully more to come. I will be starting Airman Leadership School on the 21st so all other things will most likely come to a halt. Sometimes you have to head back to the real life I guess. Only for a little while though.

No Go Know has started their very own blog. In recent history, Scott, the old guy of NGK has had some very wonderful tales to tell via their myspace page. But, like myself, they have ventured over to the world of actual blogspherical romance as I like to call it. Just another way for you to hear more beautiful words from one of the greatest fucking rock and fucking roll groups of everfucking time!!! Yeah, it's that serious.

Another one of my favorite artists has developed her own site. And apparantely she has infused it with special healing powers. I don't know what sort of App she had to get to do this, but check out the seriously strange and talented Larkin Grimm at her website.

And....want to have a jolly carefree evening in Portland, OR? You should know the Ascetic Junkies. They are always playing, and make some of the happiest sad music ever. I know I should advertise them more, but there are so many things and so many beers that happen. So, I am doing it now. No matter how lacking in suspense this seems, I fucking love these fools.

So, there is the extra portion for today. I really need to make this more interesting. Hopefully my ever so hip friends from No Go Know or The Fenbi International Superstars can give me some advice. Please?

What has been happening. Not too damn much.

I had a long week of work after three weeks of having none. I have not written a single album review in over a week and a half. I know it is about time to crank some more out before I head to Airman Leadership School. But, Fense was nice enough to post one I had in the Pending Review section for Electric Needle Room. A very cooky and exubrant Midwest duo.

I began work on a novel that is loosely inspired on several stories I have wanted to tell, and decided to weave them together. I will be deploying to Doha, Qatar at the very beginning of next year and this is where I hope to put alot of work into it. Not going to mention too much until the time comes. But, it should be fun.

My good friend Christopher Eaves over at OGP Productions has been kind enough to review and edit my first draft of A Gathering Storm, an screenplay I wrote in 9 days while deployed to Iraq. Whenever he is finished turning yellowed papers into PDF gold, I will do what I can to share to snippets of it to garner more opinions. But, I am not rushing Chris on this. I am fond of this script only because I can remember very fondly what it was like to write it, and put my soul into every free second I had to completing it. As far as quality though, it is lacking much of it. It is really just an expirementation at best.

Falling in love with the work of James Frey. Finished the first book of what I call the Great Lie Trilogy, A Million Little Pieces. It was an intriguing story. I have yet to check out the sequel, My Friend Leonard, but I have found is actual novel Bright Shiny Morning to be his best work yet. Once again, Eff Oprah, she needs to apologize AGAIN and AGAIN. And every day until James thinks everything is okay.

promotions, and slower coming

It has been a strange gathering of happenings as of lately. I recently found out that I am going to be promoted to the rank of Staff Sargeant in my day job in the United States Air Force. I went and saw a midnight show of Inglorious Basterds at the wonderful (yet expensive as FUCK) Cinatopia in Vancouver, WA but had a strange nervous breakdown after two days filled with a bottle of whiskey, malt liqour energy drinks, PBR, and a grand sense of shame. But, I am better now. Sober for the most part, and ready to take on a new sense of responsibility. But, this is going to mean distancing myself from my one creative outlet.....music reviews.

I will also be deploying to the Americanized country of Qatar for six months. There I plan to work out like a fat meathead in hiding, and finish a novel I started out of pure drunken desperation, but I feel it has potential. We shall see. Christopher Eaves may tell me other wise.

Work on the album reviews may slow down. Or they may pick up. It is very hard to tell right now. I have to focuse on life studies. I also have three children that need to eat, and a wife studying to become an interior designer. It's a rough fucking time right now.

As well as this band that Fense covered that happens to feature fellow Fensepost contributor Ben Meyercord, a super brilliant Portland musician and blogger (his work is regularly appreciated over at Crappy Indie Music). That band is AristeiA. They fucking rock. If you don't like them, then you do not rock.

More to come folks. I have daughter 1 of 3 crying for my attention. Awe, the joys of parenting and the military. It is a confusing exotic experience.

P.S. Fuck Oprah, and fuck you if you do not appreciate James Frey. I love this man.

It's going to be a big week. I've pre-ordered my tickets for the midnight showing of Inglorious Bastereds at the very glorious Cinetopia Theatre in Vancouver, WA on Thursday. My promotion results come out on Thursday as well. I have to be back to work on Monday after what will be a month long hiatus. Not looking forward to waking up before 8 a.m.

Interesting enough, I wrote this while lounging around Deaconess Medical Center waiting hand and foot on my wife two days after having life cut directly out of her. But, since we've been home, my work is lagging. I have two pieces written, but not submitted. The days are long and short and brisk and hard. I know I will find a groove once again. The pressure of three children has to subside at some point right? Right? Shit.

TART Productions co-founder Tyler Averett has successfully completed all requirements to recieve his Associates Degree from Lower Columbia College in Longview, WA. And in perfect Tyler fashion, it only took 7 years, and three different schools to get it. By 2029, our man will have a Bachelor's Degree. We hope. All jokes aside, Congratulations Tyler!

Back in 2007, I saw this band known as The Young Immortals perform at the Firehouse Brewery (Rapid Shitty, SD) that just blew my mind away. Their show as average, but the energy was fucking fantastic! I was hooked. They showed me that it was okay to like happy music for once.

Due to circumstances beyond 2/3 of the trio's control, they broke up. It's a whole story that if you really want to know. It's out there like litter along the super information highway. Anyway, shortly after the better 2/3 of the group picked up a couple new friends, Orion and Todd(y?) and created the Irish rock inspired Fenbi International Superstars. They have been rocking Portland, Oregon for a while now I felt horrible that I had not mentioned their work. I really thought of them now after hearing that drummer Scotty (TYI and Fenbi) has resigned his role in the band to persue his degree in nursing. I congratulate him, and wish him the best. But, Fenbi continues! They were nominated for a Portland Music Award for what I could only call, "super cool happy world music", to put it vaguely. If you ever catch yourself roaming around Dublin Pub in PDX, there is a fine chance you will catch a Fenbi show. In fact, here are some upcoming shows:

August 27th @ Virgo & Pisces in Portland, OR.

September 5th @ Dublin Pub in Portland, OR.
September 16th @ Boons Treasury in Salem, OR.

I have had a good internet friendly correspondence with TYI and Fenbi member Mike for about two years now, and will one day bring my happy ass across the state and over the river to catch a Fenbi show to show some actuall support besides minor bullshit like this. He's always been helpful with TART Productions, formerly Northwest Flava, a subtle difference if any. And much to Mike's dismay most likely, I still find myself scrolling the the bottom of my iPod and playing "Photograph" or "Hot For Sarah" by TYI, the band I once called the Best Musicians in Portland for 2007. But, when the heart left the group, Fenbi was born. A wise wise fucking choice!

Yung Temp opens for Ying Yang Twins

Ahh, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. For years, bikers and tourists alike have flocked to this small town deserted from normal society 50 weeks of the year. But, for the first two weeks of August, it is almost majestical what happens you put half a million people into a town that generally holds 3,000. Tattooes, Harleys, Beer, greasy hair, and.....hip hop?

So you might not be expecting to head to a motorcycle rally and hear Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz, Three Six Mafia, or Ying Yang Twins. But, if you have been there the last three years, you would have had the oppurtunity. Yes, a bit of culture has been thrown into the mix as of lately. You still have the general artists that would be expected such as Toby Keith, Tesla, Jackyl, and, of course the headliner, Aerosmith (watch your step Steve!!). But, this year, on August 8th, rally participants were fortunate enough to have one of hip hops rising stars perform in support of his citymates, the Ying Yang Twins.

With a last minute effort from friend and teammate T.Y. Lamb, our man Yung Temp was given his moment to shine as he shared the stage with Lamb in a shockingly well recieved opening act. They performed their own ORIGINAL work with ORIGINAL beats, where as many artists wouldn't put enough effort into even doing that. Lamb and Temp ripped through their set and had the crowd rolling by the time local Rapid City artist K.O.D. came to do what he has been doing for years, tear up South Dakota! (there would be one more act, not worth mentioning) With these two wonderful performances, the Ying Yang Twins were in full support and ready to kill the rally in their regular flaboyant style.

Our friend Yung Temp has proven that he is only getting started. He is continually making music and developing what inspires him to be a better artist. He will continue to work with T.Y. Lamb and A-kustic Island Entertainment to produce the new sound of the south. Temp's standing in Rapid City will soon come to an end. He has his sights set on Europe, Asia, and, of course, back down to the ATL where his heart will always been. His standing with TART Productions is one more than just acceptance, he is a core member of the traditions and foundations that it was meant to be. He will always have a home here. To the future!

Generating Life

It's been over 54 years since we dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. John Hughes died. And Sotomayor has became our first latin female Supreme Court justice. Obama regains negative criticism. These are all things that have happened after the birth of my third daughter, Lelaina Reann Trembath on August 5th 2009. Nothing else seems to matter. So, when you are heading to your local car dealership to turn in your "clunker" of a ride to recieve that cool new rebate, I will be here. Here at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane where I have been since Wednesday morning, and will remain until tomorrow afternoon eating Taco Bell, watching VH1, and basking in the glory of a new child, and the pride of such a strong and loving wife who is recovering perfectly from a cessarian section not 48 hours ago. This is what life is about.

My daughter is almost two days old. And I've spent two nights sleeping upon a noisy pleather couch and tending to my wife's every desire. It sure has been fun. Although it has brought constipation, sobriety, and loss of consecutive hours of sleep, this has been a great experience. It really has been new. Although this is our third trip to the hospital (first in Spokane) to deliver a beautiful baby girl, we have never done it like this.

I watched my child come out. Straight out of the stomach. Yes, there was blood. And yes, their was acutely cut skin exposed. But, it was beautiful. She came out purple rather than deep red, but her beauty was radiant and exposing. It was perfect. And things have been great since.

It has been evening with Hulu. Changing sticky bite sized diapers. And endless trips down the brass elevator to the smoke pit. And it's been watching my daughter grow, and wife heal right before my eyes. We will be going home tomorrow. And never before have I felt more prepared to take on the task of molding and shaping three children, and providing for them the best way I know how.

I have had a few reviews posted over the last few days including pieces for Fruit Bats, Miwagemini, and Portugal. The Man (one of my favorite albums of the year) at Fensepost. As well as a review for a great new video from Corey Chisel & The Wondering Sons that will be available this afternoon. But, I haven't been paying close attention. More attentive links may be posted later. But, you know you can always check out www.fensepost.com each day to find wonderful music everyday. And a couple two or three times a week, I may show up there as well. But for now, I am going to take a nap dream of the future I will now know. Life is beautiful.

As I eagerly await Fense's goody box filled with more albums to check out and submit, as well as a new baby, I have been trying to be a good little contributor by actually finishing up the reviews from the his last box. As well as watching the Golden Girls. Those bitches rock.

And for your reading pleasure, I have a review f0r We Landed On The Moon and Russell Huie at Fensepost for you. I can't get enough of We Landed On The Moon. Melissa Eccles is most beautiful woman in indie rock. Hands down. But....well, just read the review. Russell Huie is impressive, but not near as good looking as my sweet Eccles.

29th National Veterns Wheelchair Games

There are so many obvious things to say about an event like the National Wheelchair Games. Breathtaking, inspiring, or just simply amazing. You can destroy your prententiousness phobias, and just agree with everybody. This was easily one of the greatest experiences I have ever had the honor of working for. Very few words can express exactly what it feels like to meet all these people who have give their limbs, ability to walk, or the ability to function as they had before being shipped off to foreign wars in order to protect everything that this country is suppose to stand for.

But, some of them had served and were later struck with some sort of disease impailing everything they had ever known. Much like my new friend, Judy Roth who was diagnosed with MS while she was in the Army during the sixties at 19 years old. Now, at 64 years old and just finished her 25th Wheelchair Games, she has the heart of of champion. I am a better person for meeting Judy. And I honestly had alot of fun with her today.

I spent the better part of the day at this event, and wish I would have done more. I had the great experience of working the Motor Rally. To see my new friend Judy (who sadly guess' the wrong anwser, but still ended with a thrid place finish!) and others compete, you can see a series of videos at the Paralyzed Veterans of America website courtesy of Xable.com (another very interesting sight designated towards members of the disabled community).

Again, this was amazing. The Motor Rally was more of the mild events. I really enjoyed it for this matter because I had the chance to personally interact with my fellow veterans. A truely magnificent event of tear swelling madness.
